Iwiri Choir and Performing Arts

Iwiri’s performing arts program (choir and traditional dance) is award winning and highly regarded. Highlights include:

  • 2021 Best show in the fringe for show ‘Inma’ in collaboration with Electric Fields and First Nations Dance Collective

  • Closing the 2021 Adelaide Festival with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and various community choirs from Adelaide in the show “Child of our Time’

  • 2022 Our collaboration with Adelaide Fringe for ‘SkySong’ won the Best New Event Award at the Australian Event Awards.

The Iwiṟi choir continues the Choral tradition of the Pitjantjatjara Ernabella Choir and is one of the few choirs that perform almost exclusively in an Australian first language. The choir is multi generational, with many choir members following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents who sang in the original Ernabella choir. Choir elders consider Inma (song) to be a healing balm and an important way to fulfil family and cultural obligations to teach and strengthen the next generations.
